A response to WKYT’S reporter Miranda Combs’
“Investigative Report” on
To call Suboxone treatment a “Suboxone Epidemic” is not only unfair to those with an addiction problem it is simply unjustified and wrong towards those helping people with an addiction in a professional, ethical manner. I personally have lost too many friends and family members to narcotic overdoses to simply sit and idly by and watch this misguided attempt to demonize an effective treatment that could have saved those I loved as a “Suboxone Epidemic.”
Our staff sees EXACTLY the changes we make in people’s lives daily. For you to minimize these efforts without a factual basis is not reporting, it is overly dramatizing the worse case scenario of Clinics that are not following guidelines set up by the government.
We not only want to help our patients with their addiction but want to effectively and safely get them off of Buprenorphine. We’ve seen patients come in that have been going to other clinics for up to 8 years, without being tapered off or counseled effectively. Many of these patients have not only remained drug free but have safely tapered off of Buprenorphine within a year.
We hear many things about our Treatment Facility including the phrases below.
Hearing you refer to this treatment “globally’ as a “Suboxone Epidemic” is not only unfair to our patients but it simply is uninformed about clinics that are MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
ALL CLINICS ARE NOT THE SAME!
To condemn a treatment for people addicted to Narcotics, (Oxycodone, Heroin, Hydrocodone, Morphine, Codeine) calling it a “Suboxone Epidemic”, simply because there are Doctors abusing the drug (In prescribing, lack of proper monitoring, lack of effective counseling and not safely tapering dosage) is simply pushing those who are addicted back on the streets to get their “fix” and is LITERALLY KILLING PEOPLE.
The FACTS are that overdose deaths are on the rise (up as much as 25% in multiple recent studies) in direct correlation to recent changes in laws and the ostracization of Clinics that are actually doing everything correctly.
Yes, there are bad Doctors and Clinics out there that simply want the money but to condemn ALL Clinics and Doctors, especially those that are helping people, saving lives, monitoring, tapering and empowering patients to be free from not only their addiction but to provide them with the tools necessary to rebuild their families and provide them with the confidence to STAY CLEAN… is absurd!
I have seen both sides of this story…
I have lived both sides of this story.
I feel, in my heart, that this current “witch-hunt” is killing people, real people… our neighbors, friends and associates… people YOU know. People who are sincerely seeking help with their addiction. This “witch-hunt” is forcing those truly seeking help back to the “real” drug dealers; forcing them to get their “fix” from the street, that can, does and will increase the death rate. The death rate of those around us, many of which (unbeknownst to you) you may know, love or work with.
Simply stating that “all of this is bad because this one is bad” is not only irresponsible, it is ignoring the facts and results obtained by a Clinic that is using Buprenorphine as an effective means to save lives, rebuild families and give those who are addicted HOPE!
Rather than focusing on the small percentage using words like “Suboxone Epidemic”, perhaps you should report on the real issue here.
If you want to condemn, outlaw or discredit anything about a program that is PROVEN effective..
FOCUS ON THE DOCTORS AND / OR THE CLINICS that are doing the job poorly (illegally) and not following protocol set forth by the government itself!
Don’t simply ostracize Good Doctors, Caring Clinics and success stories from a multitude of people who really care and are trying their best to make a difference in this world!
If you or someone you love is struggling with an addiction problem and are truly seeking help…
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
I promise you, in spite of this report of a “Suboxone Epidemic”, good clinics are out there and you should “feel” it as soon as you walk in.
When you don’t feel like a number but a human being, when you feel like you are not being judged but you are being cared for… You’re on the right track!
If you are ready to Start on the Road to Recovery…
or your simply not happy with the progress you’re making…
YOU DESERVE BETTER!
